German Course B2 Advanced
What do you learn at the German class B2 level
At this level, you are able to understand the main contents of complex texts on concrete and abstract topics. In your own field, you also understand specialized discussions. You can communicate spontaneously and fluently, making a normal conversation with native speakers easily possible for both sides without much effort. This means that you can express yourself confidently and competently in everyday life, in your profession, during your studies, or while traveling. You can formulate your opinion on different topics and present advantages and disadvantages.
The four skills at B2
The B2 course emphasizes the development of all four language skills:
- Listening comprehension: You learn to follow longer speeches, presentations, or discussions, even if they are not clearly structured or if relationships are only implicitly expressed.
- Reading comprehension: You can understand articles, reports, and literary texts in which viewpoints are presented or complex relationships are explained.
- Speaking: You can express yourself clearly and in detail on a variety of topics, explain your views on current issues, and state the advantages and disadvantages of different options.
- Writing: You are capable of writing clear, structured texts, such as letters, reports, or essays, in which you convey information or present arguments.
The Deutschzentrum Wien offers an excellent opportunity to learn the German language in a practical and communicative environment. Speaking is the main focus of the courses and makes up at least half of the lessons. This makes the courses ideal for anyone who wants to actively improve their language skills.

Now you learn how to express your own opinion on various topics clearly and convincingly. It is especially important to remain polite and objective – even when disagreeing with someone or offering criticism. In the course, you will learn how to do this best, which expressions can help you, and how to structure your arguments.

Reading is one of the skills you will further develop in the B2 course. It is not about literary texts or poetry, but rather factual texts. These texts are often written in a journalistic or scientific style and deal with current or relevant topics from society, politics, science, or everyday life. In order to understand and make use of these texts successfully, it is important to develop a targeted strategy and to practice regularly.

What exactly do you learn in the B2 German course?
Communication in Professional and Everyday Life
In the B2 course, the practical application of the language is the focus. You learn how to communicate professionally in a work context:
- Expressing and justifying your opinion convincingly
- Making suggestions, responding to suggestions, and convincing others
- Initiating, conducting, and concluding conversations
- Arguing factually in discussions
- Constructively disagreeing and expressing criticism, responding to criticism, and refuting arguments
- Identifying problems and formulating suggestions for their solution
- Formulating complaints and responding to complaints
- Conducting phone calls, writing emails, and participating in meetings
- Expressing feelings and understanding and appropriately responding to the wishes and emotions of others
You also benefit from your new skills in your private life. You can discuss social issues such as the environment, politics, culture, and education, while representing your viewpoints.
Expansion of grammar knowledge
German grammar at the B2 level becomes more complex, but also more exciting! You deepen the structures you already know and learn new, more challenging topics:
- Adjective declension: You learn to decline adjectives correctly after definite and indefinite articles, possessive pronouns, and without articles.
- Noun-verb combinations: You learn how to make your expression more variable and idiomatic with fixed phrases.
- Relative clauses: You can form complex sentences to describe more precisely and connect information.
- Subjunctive II (continuation from B1): You practice formulating politely, expressing wishes and unreal situations. You can use the subjunctive in the past (what would have been if...).
- Subjunctive I as a means of indirect speech in newspaper texts
- Passive: You understand and use the passive in various tenses and contexts. You know passive substitutes (e.g., "man," "lassen").
- Genitive: You understand the use of the genitive in specialized texts and administrative texts. You know the most important prepositions with genitive (e.g., because of, despite, thanks to, during, instead of). You know alternatives to the genitive and can apply them (e.g., "von" + dative, subordinate clauses, verbal style).
- N-declension - a special group of masculine nouns that takes an "n" as an ending in all cases
- Nominal style and verbal style - German in specialized texts and German for fluent communication
- Verbs with fixed prepositions at the B2 level, prepositional adverbs (e.g., "daran," "dabei," "damit," etc.) with subordinate clauses
