Faster learning success German B1

How quickly can you learn German B1?

The German level B1 is defined by fluent language use in everyday life and private life.

Duration of the B1 - German course

It depends on your prior knowledge how quickly you reach level B1 in German. If you have successfully completed level A2, you can complete level B1 at our school in a four-week intensive course or an eight-week standard course. This includes a total of 48 teaching units with the teacher in the school (or live online) and at least 48 teaching units on our learning platform as well as with homework. In addition, you should use the time to watch videos in German, talk to many people in German, listen to podcasts, read a book or magazines, and follow German-speaking channels on social media parallel to the course. In this way, you can complete level B1 in 4 to 8 weeks. Of course, you should continue to practice and make an effort to fill individual gaps independently.

If you have no or little prior knowledge, you should plan for 4 to 6 months to complete level B1 in German: as a six-month standard course or as a four-month semi-intensive course.

Skills at the intermediate level B1

At level B1, you are able to converse with friends and acquaintances for a longer time about personal topics, such as your family, your experiences on your last vacation, your hobbies, and interests. You can also talk about your dreams, wishes, and hopes. Small talk at a party should no longer be a problem. You can express your opinion and experiences on various topics. You are also able to read simple texts, e.g., in magazines or social media.

B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

"Can understand the main points when clear standard language is used and when it is about familiar things from work, school, leisure, etc. Can handle most situations encountered while traveling in the language area. Can express themselves simply and coherently about familiar topics and personal interests. Can report on experiences and events, describe dreams, hopes, and goals, and provide short reasons or explanations for plans and views."

Is German B1 enough?

Once you have completed level B1, you have officially reached the intermediate level. This means that you can use German effortlessly in all everyday situations. For example, you can chat with friends at a party, talk to your partner's relatives, go shopping, visit the doctor, make and reschedule appointments. You can express your feelings, state wishes, and describe hopes, plans, and dreams.

Level B1 is also sufficient for simpler professions, e.g., in sales, crafts, construction, and agriculture. However, it is not yet sufficient for professions with a lot of customer contact and interactions with other people, such as teacher, doctor, or consultant. For that, you need at least level B2, preferably C1. C1 is required for scientific activities at the university. However, it is possible to start some degree programs with language skills at A2 or B1, e.g., music, art, or business. This often depends on the respective university, and you should inquire directly there.
